Mumu is a useful case study in why tokens and trademarks protect different parts of a crypto brand.
Blockchain is excellent at proving ownership of digital assets.
It is much less useful at answering a different question: who controls the brand identity of a character?
That distinction becomes important when a memecoin grows beyond a contract address.
Mumu the Bull is a useful illustration. The current token exists onchain, but the character itself comes from a longer cultural history associated with 4chan’s /biz/ board and bullish trading memes since 2018.
The project is now building an offchain ownership layer around that identity through trademark applications.
MUMU is listed by IP Australia as Application 2682039. The project also identifies MUMU THE BULL as Application 2682957. The stated categories include digital media and NFT-authenticated works, apparel and entertainment branding.
The filings highlight two different kinds of infrastructure.
Onchain infrastructure can establish token supply, transfers and contract provenance.
Trademark infrastructure can help establish the official commercial source of branded goods and services.
They are complementary rather than interchangeable.
That matters if Mumu expands into physical merchandise, licensed digital content, entertainment, partnerships or other consumer-facing uses. A blockchain cannot by itself prevent unrelated companies from creating confusingly similar commercial products in traditional markets.
The international framework also matters. Australia is a Madrid Protocol member, and WIPO’s Madrid System provides eligible applicants with a route to seek trademark protection across selected member jurisdictions using a qualifying domestic filing or registration as the basic mark.
This is a more mature conversation than the usual memecoin debate because it treats culture as something with infrastructure requirements.
Mumu already has the difficult-to-engineer part: a recognizable character with years of community-created context.
The current challenge is building the systems that allow that recognition to support an official brand without undermining the open internet culture that made the character valuable.
That is a problem more crypto projects will face as digital communities begin turning memes into durable assets.
